  5.     Last September President Bush vowed to enlist the armed
  6. forces in preventing illegal drugs from being smuggled into the
  7. U.S. Recently, he approved plans to station a naval task force
  8. off the Caribbean coast of Colombia to monitor sea and air
  9. traffic. The task force might consist of an aircraft carrier,
  10. up to eight support vessels, and E-2C Hawkeye aircraft equipped
  11. with sophisticated radar that can track hundreds of planes at
  12. a time. Rather than shoot down suspected smugglers, the force
  13. would observe planes flying in or out of Colombia and notify
  14. Colombian authorities or the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs
  15. Service of the smugglers' whereabouts. If Colombia agrees to
  16. cooperate, the task force could begin operations within months.
